Working From Home: Helpful Tips
Whilst very different from what most of us are used to, national lockdowns and Government restrictions have seen working from home become the new normal.
Working from home can have many benefits to both the employee and employer, such as lower overheads, more time at home, lower travel costs, and increased levels of trust. That said, working from home does come with its challenges.
To help you with your working from home experience, we have compiled a list of tips and tricks to help you, based on secondary research and what our team have found helpful, having worked from home since March 2020.
Tips when working from home
Stick to a routine and prepare for your day
Keeping a routine will help you maintain a good working attitude, giving yourself enough time in the morning to wake up and ease yourself into the day ahead – studies show that just 10-15 minutes of yoga or exercise can boost your mood and help you ease into the day. Other behaviours you could adopt include a morning shower, a morning walk, or even getting ready in your work uniform to help get yourself into the right mind frame!
Create a dedicated workspace
If you are able to set up a dedicated workspace in your home, it may help you get ‘in the zone’ and help you function whilst working from home. This will subconsciously help you to separate your work and home life, so any stresses of the day can be left behind. Working in a bright, heated and comfortable room will also help, and you could also incorporate house plants to help enhance creativity, wellbeing, and reduce stress; as studies have shown that house plants can increase productivity and cognition by 15%.
Make sure you take your breaks and are eating a good lunch
When working from home it can be easy to get wrapped up in the working day. It is imperative that you are taking regular breaks, if even just for 5-10 minutes (particularly when working with screens or laptops). You should also stick to your workday routine by taking your allocated lunch break (away from your workstation, if possible!). Eating a good meal during the day not only keeps you awake and productive, but it is also shown to improve your mental wellbeing.

Keep a healthy work-life balance
As mentioned above, it is important to keep your work and home life separate, as it can be easy for the lines to become blurred. In sticking to working hours, having a workspace, and taking regular breaks – this can be achieved!
Try to maintain a positive working attitude
Sometimes easier said than done, but this is essential for both your health and your work, and, whilst working from home has become the new normal, it won’t last forever! Keep your mind focused on the goals you are set to achieve, and remember that there is light at the end of the tunnel!
